Caer Caradoc is a must-see if you’re in the Shropshire Hills. We were staying very close-by at Middle Farm & Cottages, just the otherside of Church Stretton, which meant that a sunrise hike was on the cards. For this particular route, we parked in a lay-by next to the A49 but it’s only a short walk along the grass verge until you’re on the trail.

Caer Caradoc is Welsh, meaning ‘Caradog’s Fort’ due to the remains of a fort atop the hill.

The route takes you through a few farmers fields, passed two ponds and then up the steep ascent to the top. If you time it right, you’ll get to see the whole of Shropshire waking up as the sun comes over the horizon.

We came here on a beautiful morning in early October and we were the only ones here - what a treat,

Once we watched the sunrise with a hot flask of tea, we then continued the circular walk down the underside of the hill and back down to the car.

This is such a great sunrise hike to do because it doesn’t take too long to get up, and you’re blessed with the most beautiful view over Shropshire and surrounding counties.
